Who we are

The Invisible Disease Club creates personalized tools that help people with autoimmune and other invisible conditions translate what they feel into something family, friends, employers and clinicians can see and understand. The IDC uses alter egos to flip our symptoms into badges of survival, evidence of strength. We use these badges to connect with the community and stand proud.

"We know what you've been through to get here. The years of tests that came back normal. The suggestions that it was stress, anxiety, or just getting older. We know you've heard you don't look sick so many times it almost started to sound true. We believe you. Full stop."

The concept

Tools to explain what you feel. Companions to show what you carry.

The badge speaks before you do.

"I was at the store and the clerk asked about my Phoenix badge. That turned into a twenty-minute conversation about chronic pain. I've never talked that openly to a stranger in my life."

"I saw the Eagle sticker on someone's laptop at the coffee shop. I hadn't told anyone about my RA in two years. I leaned over and said: I have that too. We've been friends since. It sounds small. It was everything."

"At my pain clinic, the PT and OT team noticed my IDC shirts. Once they understood there were 14 alter egos, they asked for stickers for every disease. They said: HIPAA means we can't connect them to each other, but we can hand them a badge."

Why we exist.

People with invisible diseases aren't served well by our existing support networks like doctors, therapists, colleagues and even friends and family. We believe this is largely because we haven't had the means to communicate our lived experience. This leaves us under treated and feeling unsupported. By using new visual and language tools, we can change that narrative. Change our story.

Invisible Disease Club creates personalized tools, starting with pain and symptom cards, and Alter Egos that help people with autoimmune and other invisible conditions translate what they feel into something family, friends, employers and clinicians can see and understand.

Make the invisible visible, together.

Appearing fine while struggling can make it hard to explain what you need. We believe your lived experience deserves to be seen and understood.

Tools for communicating our lived experience.

We start with personalized pain and symptom cards. Use words, numbers, color and expressions to describe what you feel and how it affects your day.

Your cards give you a way to share your experience with family, friends, employers and clinicians.

Alter egos: symptoms reframed as strength.

We take a defining symptom of each disease or condition and match it with an animal that embodies a positive aspect of that experience. Our alter egos are companions and badges of survival, evidence of strength.

Chronic fatigue is the Sloth: not because he is slow, but because he can live a full life in spite of being slower than everyone else. For rheumatoid arthritis, the Eagle turns damaged finger joints into talons: yes, I'm still fierce, and I'm more than this one part of my body.

Choose one companion or several. Wear your badges to connect with people who understand, stand proud and open a conversation about your lived experience.

How the club was born.

Sam Driver, IDC's founder, was trained as a geneticist and spent years building products. He was also a lifelong gamer - someone who grew up in worlds where your level, your badges, and your attributes told a story about who you were.

Sam's own diagnosis took two decades. He pushed his doctors hard - deep into clinical research, into the immunology of what was going wrong in his body - because his training gave him the vocabulary to do it. His condition was so unusual his doctors simply started calling it Sam Disease. Most people can't do what he did, and most of them spend years being dismissed as a result.

So he started helping friends navigate their diagnoses. And he saw the same pattern everywhere: the disease was hard, but the isolation was heavier.

The gaming metaphor came naturally. In games, you earn badges. Your attributes are visible to others who understand the system - and when you see someone with the same attributes, you instantly know something essential about them. A shortcut to connection.

The Alter Egos were born: a manifestation of each invisible disease, flipped from something to hide into something to wear. A badge of what you carry - made visible, made wearable, made into a reason to say hi.
